Run for Rights: TCHRD Campaign Highlights Tibetan Political Prisoners on World Human Rights Day

As the world commemorates the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), we are reminded of its enduring message: civil, economic, political, and cultural rights are universal, inalienable, indivisible, interdependent, and interrelated. For over seven decades, this landmark proclamation has been a source of inspiration in the global fight for justice, equality, and dignity.

Yet, in Tibet, these universal principles remain gravely under threat. Human rights violations continue to escalate, with intensified crackdowns on freedom of expression, religion, and peaceful assembly. Policies of forced assimilation erode Tibetan cultural identity, while large-scale development projects such as hydropower dams displace communities, destroy sacred monasteries, and sever ties to centuries-old cultural and spiritual heritage—all without consultation or fair compensation. These actions not only violate fundamental rights but also threaten the very survival of Tibetan culture.

The repression in Tibet reflects a broader challenge posed by authoritarian regimes, as the Chinese government continues to undermine core values of freedom, democracy, and human rights on a global scale. The international community must act decisively to uphold these principles, particularly in defense of oppressed and marginalized groups like the Tibetan people.

In observance of International Human Rights Day, the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), in conjunction with the Central Tibetan Women’s Association and the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress, organized a Run for Rights marathon campaign in Dharamshala, India. The event saw participation from more than 65 individuals from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds, including a 6-year-old child who joined the initiative to advocate for the release of Tibetan political prisoners detained for their peaceful pursuit of freedom and justice.

Today, we honor the courage of thousands of Tibetan human rights defenders whose resilience and determination to uphold justice inspire global solidarity. Their struggle underscores the enduring relevance of the UDHR and calls on the world to act.

We urge the Chinese government to honor its international human rights commitments, end repressive policies in Tibet, and unconditionally release all individuals arbitrarily detained for exercising their fundamental rights. We also call on the international community to amplify the voices of human rights defenders, demand accountability for violations, and support efforts to protect human rights in Tibet and beyond.

On this day, let us reaffirm our collective commitment to defending the principles of the UDHR. Every effort to uphold human rights strengthens the foundation for a just, equitable, and humane world. Together, we can ensure that these rights are not just ideals but a reality for all.
