Tibetan man detained incommunicado after staging a peaceful protest
Chinese security forces detained and disappeared a Tibetan man on 27 November 2015 for carrying out a peaceful protest calling for freedom and long life for the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama in Kardze (Ch: Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province.
Twenty-nine years old Sangay was immediately arrested after he protested against the Chinese government at Kardze County town, calling for Tibet’s freedom and long life of the Dalai Lama. In the video footage circulating on social media sites, Sangay is seen walking along the main road of the county town, shouting slogans and throwing lungta leaflets in the air before being apprehended by security officers.
A local Tibetan said days before the protest, he had seen Sangay breaking down in tears after watching a brief video of the Dalai Lama walking.
“He was in deep distress [after watching the video], as the Dalai Lama has grown very old. He had said he didn’t find much purpose in living if he couldn’t see his Lama at least once in his lifetime.”
As of now, local police have not informed Sangay’s family members and friends about his whereabouts. His family and relatives fear that he is being interrogated and tortured in an undisclosed location.
Sangay, 29, was born to parents Loga and Bochak. He is a native of Drathab village in Zakhog (Ch: Zhake) Township in Kardze County. Before his detention, Sangay was living in his wife’s ancestral village of Karab in Dardo Township near Kardze, with his wife Yangchen Choetso, mother-in-law and two children.
