Bora Monastery under siege after protest

Tibetan monks at Bora Monastery staged peaceful protests yesterday against the Chinese government and even marched to the local township office following which security officers from People’s Armed Police and Public Security Bureau have now surrounded the monastery on all sides.

The protests occurred at around 12 pm (Tibet Time) on 20 March 2012 in Sangchu (Ch: Xiahe) County in Kanlho (Ch: Gannan) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Gansu Province.

About a hundred monks from Bora Monastery carried Tibetan flags and shouted slogans calling for human rights, religious freedom, and language rights in Tibet and marched to the township office where the protests continued, according to sources.

The monastery is now under siege with security officers keeping a strict watch over movements in and out of the monastery.

It is not immediately known whether anyone was arrested during the protests.
