Police beat Tibetan protesters with batons, rifle butt

On 7 March 2012, Khedup Dorjee, a monk at Za-Samdrup Monastery in Kardze County, was severely beaten by security officers for peacefully protesting in the crowded county market of Kardze (Ch: Ganzi). He was arrested only after the beating.

Khedup Dorjee, aged around 38, was born to father Rindor and mother Jampa Khando in Heina village, Zacog Township, Kardze County, Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. In mid-1990s, he had visited India and studied at Serajey Monastery in south India.

In another incident on 11 February 2012, another Tibetan man was beaten up with batons and rifle butts by security officers before arresting him. The man, identified as Tashi Palden, peacefully protested in the Kardze county market at around 11 a.m (Tibet Time). He shouted slogans such as “Long Live His Holiness the Dalai Lama” and “Independence for Tibet”, said sources.

Tashi Palden is the son of Tenpa Nyima and Tsering Yangtso and hails from Arura village, Khogtsey Township, Kardze County.
